Budget BOX—a team formed by four students from the Master of Arts in Personal Finance Education (MA(PFE)) programme—won the Bronze Award of the Personal Finance Ambassador Programme 2021/22 on 15 January 2022. The Personal Finance Ambassador Programme 2021/22 was co-organised by HKEX Foundation Limited, the Investor and Financial Education Council, and St James’ Settlement.

Under the theme of “Digital Personal Finance”, 14 teams from local tertiary institutions were shortlisted and trained as Personal Finance Ambassadors to develop on-campus financial education projects. Six teams were selected to compete for awards at the Presentation and Award Ceremony that was held on 15 January 2022.

The members of Budget BOX were Morrian Xiao Shiqi, Away Chen Weiwei, Taro Liu Yutong and Will Ou Shiteng. As a Personal Finance Ambassador, Budget BOX conducted both online education events through Instagram posts, WhatsApp group activities and game websites, and offline campaigns such as physical booths and workshops to boost knowledge on Digital Personal Finance among EdUHK students. Over 60 students participated in “University Students’ Money Management in the big data era”, one of the workshops organised by Budget BOX. The campaigns have attracted a total of over 350 EdUHK students to join.

Morrian, leader of Budget BOX, said: “We want to give Dr Tan Weiqiang a big thank you. He has been encouraging us to join different competitions both on and off campus from the very beginning. In the Personal Finance Ambassador activity, Dr Tan gave us valuable advice on the details of organising on-campus promotional activities. He even went to great lengths to guide us on how to promote our booths and organise workshops for fellow students.”

Dr Tan Weiqiang, Associate Professor in the Department of Social Sciences and MA(PFE) programme leader, said, “As more and more people grow aware of the need to learn personal finance skills, personal finance education has become an increasingly important part of education. The MA(PFE) programme is devoted to training professional financial educators of the future. By participating in activities like the Personal Finance Ambassador Programme, we hope students can accumulate more first-hand experience in applying their financial knowledge to managing financial issues in their everyday life.”

EdUHK students who participated in the activities understood more about their own personal financial status and risk tolerance, and produced personal financial wellness proposals under the guidance of Budget BOX. To let more students learn the importance of being fiscally responsible, MA(PFE) students will continue to organise workshops on personal finance in the future.
